Friends and All:
You should have seen the faces of pride and joy of the 20 Filipino-American kids who stepped on the hard court of the Philips Arena as led by Corey Brownell of the Atlanta Hawks organization and Raymond Townsend, the first and only Filipino-American who ever played in the NBA. A part of the Filipino Hoops and Heritage Night last Friday, March 5, 2010 was for our kids to be under each basketball goal at half time of the Hawks and Warriors game, to observe the two teams warming up. Some of them actual touched the ball and tossed back to the players. And when one of them (a 9 year old born here and has never seen the Philippines) after coming home from the game, calls his Filipino grandma in Tampa and proudly declares “Hey lola! You know what? I am now a Filipino as I was a part of the Filipino Hoops and Heritage Night,” then, we know that we have done our part as Filipino parents and as a Filipino-American community.
When Raymond Townsend, after doing his 3rd or 4th Filipino Hoops and Heritage Night in other NBA cities, tells you that he has the best organizing team in Atlanta thus far, and the Philippine Ambassador to the United States Willy C. Gaa acknowledges that in all of the US cities he has been to as an ambassador, that he has been given the best reception here in Atlanta during the Filipino Hoops and Heritage Night meet & greet session and Saturday morning breakfast, then we know that we have done our part well as Filipino-American community leaders.
That being said, I would like to thank the 2010 Fil-Am Board, Paccga Board and to all of you the Filipino-American community of Georgia and the other community leaders for stepping up and supporting this historic event. For no matter how hard we work (as community leaders) in organizing and promoting these events, the success ultimately depends on your support and participation. We acknowledge the fact that not everybody can be available at all times to support all community events, thus we try to reach out to as many as we can in promoting all of our activities. All that we ask is for you to help us invite all of your friends and families to these events, especially those that we have no way of reaching. For as always,
Together, we can make a difference!
Salamat po and Mabuhay ang Pilipino!
